I, We, and the Space Between
I, We, and the Space Between, GSU Perimeter College JCLRC Gallery, Clarkston, GA, Jan 8-Feb 29, 2024
I, We, and the Space Between, was an exhibition of the individual and collective voices of Georgia based painters, printmakers, and mixed media artists, Lisa Alembik, Eilis Crean, Erin Dixon, Stephanie Kolpy, Debrah Santini, and Stephanie Smith. All artists are a mix of faculty and faculty emeriti from the University System of Georgia.
This exhibition especially features a twenty-foot-long by thirty-inches collaborative scroll drawing of mixed media on paper. Each artist created a 30-inch-wide span of the drawing, overlapping and conversing with the adjacent artists’ work to create an overall exquisite and moving visual experience.
“Across a range of material and stylistic expressions and signifiers - from visual to haptic, direct observation to abstraction, they speak of individual, personal, and community experiences of trauma and ecstasy, loss and celebration, reality, and imagination.
Their eclectic sources of inspiration span the cosmic reach of imagined planetary space travel to the earth bound deluges of natural disasters, wars and lived experience, using potent juxtapositions of the familiar and the strange, the local and the universal, the immediate and the enduring, their work collectively connects and challenges the state of human experience.
With careers intertwined for more than two decades, this exhibition presents a call and response of shared visual language and content. In their experimental and provocative handling of materials, these artists span and probe the contradictory nature of memory, intent, community, survival, love, and sacrifice.” Eilis Crean, curator
